Testing Calendar 2016 - 2017

Whenever possible, the regular bell schedule will be maintained so that testing affects only the students taking the tests - not the entire school. Teachers of the students who are taking a particular test will be assigned as test administrators. Full details for each main administration (*) will be distributed about two weeks in advance of the test.

Testing Policies

The purpose of the Gateway Assessment Program is to measure student progress on Gwinnett's essential curriculum, the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS). The content of the high school Gateway Assessment consists of AKS from the required ninth and tenth grade courses in science, social studies, and language arts. Specifically, students will be responsible for the AKS in Biology, Chemistry, World History and ninth and tenth grade Language Arts. Students will be required to write TWO (2) tasks, one about science AKS and one about social studies AKS. Documents will be provided to help students remember details of the concept they have studied. Each student response is scored by at least two raters who do not know the student's name or school. If more than one point separates the score on any feature, the paper is scored by a third judge. All high school students will take the assessment beginning in the spring of the tenth grade year. High school students will have to pass the Gateway examination before they receive a GCPS diploma.

Gwinnett County Resource for the Gateway.

The PSAT will be administered on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 - there is no make-up administration for students who are absent for testing. This test is excellent preparation for this Scholasic Aptitude Test (SAT), which is required by colleges and universities. Eleventh grade students must take the PSAT during their junior year in order to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The PSAT is administered free of charge to all freshmen and sophomores at NGHS. Juniors may register to take PSAT for a $15 fee. Students who are Juniors at NGHS can register for the PSAT through Those who wish to register, but are not students at NGHS, will need to register through the Counseling Office at NGHS.

SAT - Scholastic Assessment Test

Starting this year, students wishing to take the SAT must pay attention to some important changes. Students cannot:

  • Take the SAT without registering online by the due dates (i.e., no "standby").
  • Sign up for one testing location (i.e., Mill Creek), but show up at another location (i.e., North Gwinnett) (i.e., no "test center change").
  • Sign up for one test date, but show up at an earlier or later test date (i.e., no "test date change").
  • Test without a registration ticket (the ticket will now include a photo of the student which the student uploads during online registration).
  • Sign up for the SAT I, but decide to take the SAT II (or vice versa.)
  • Each student will need to upload a photo of him- or herself when he or she registers online.
